Paul DeWitt McGiness, age 95 of Lake City passed away September 9, 2015 at the Maple Ridge Living Center in Lake City. Paul was born October 18, 1919 in Lake City to DeWitt and Alma (Petersen) McGiness. He married the former Agatha Jean Laubenthal on June 1, 1946. Paul graduated from Lake City High School in 1938 where he was active in band and sports. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in the South Pacific. Paul was employed as a road inspector for the Michigan State Highway Department for more than 37 years before retiring in 1981. Paul served on the Lake City School Board of Education for several years and was involved in Little League Baseball and Youth Basketball and was a member of the American Legion Post #300 for many years. He enjoyed dancing , playing cards, golf, camping and fishing. He loved vegetable gardening and listening to Ernie Harwell on the radio. He was a member of the St Stephen Catholic Church in Lake City and was a Eucharistic Minister. Paul was the best Dad in the world. He is survived by his wife, Jean of 69 years, daughter, Linda (Ken) Raden of Fort Myers, FL, and sons Bill (Marcia) McGiness, Joe (Phyllis) McGiness, and John (Cathy) McGiness all of Lake City and daughter in law Marlene McGiness of Lake City. Also surviving him is a sister in law Bert McGiness of Midland; nine grandchildren: Jamie (Jim) Hardesty of Ft. Myers, FL, John Raden of Eugene, Oregon, Matt (Amanda) McGiness of Mesick, Bryan McGiness of Lake City, Thaddeus (fiancé, Mallory Young) McGiness of Philadelphia, Brandon (fiancé, Allison LaTour) of Interlochen, Zachary McGiness of Traverse City, Seth McGiness of Lake City and Erin McGiness of Lake City and also three great grandchildren; James, Aaron and Bryant Hardesty and Owen McGiness. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, eight sisters and brothers and a son Gary McGiness. A Funeral Mass will be 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2015 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Lake City with Rev. Bryan Medlin officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Young Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Lake City Cemetery with the American Legion Post #300 providing Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lake City Athletic Boosters.
