Austin Jay Spalding, age 81, of Lake City passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014
at the Brook Assisted Living in Houghton Lake.
He was born May 7, 1932 in Walkerville, Ontario, Canada. His parents were
Austin Jay Sr. and Bessie A. (Pass) Spalding.
Austin married the former MataBell Joy Bridson March 24, 1950 in Cadillac.
She preceded him in death May 31, 2000.
Austin attended Lake City Schools prior to entering the military. In 1951 he
enlisted in the Marine Corps and served until 1952. He continued serving in the
Reserves until 1958.
He was employed with the City of Muskegon Police Department for 31 years
until his retirement and moved to Lake City in 1988.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 99 in Muskegon, the American Legion Post 300 of Lake City and was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing.
He especially enjoyed spending time with his family at their hunting cabin.
He is survived by two grandsons: Thomas and Jonathan Spalding, both of
Royal Oak.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two sons, Mark and Steven.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the
Young Funeral Home in Lake City. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon until
service time at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Walton Junction Cemetery in Fife Lake Township in the
spring.
