Russel was born on April 21, 1957 in Prudenville, Michigan to Russel and Evelyn (Lewis) Sutherland. As a lifelong member of the Merritt and Houghton Lake area, Russel attended High School and soon after began his working life. Russel served the area as a paramedic and volunteer fireman for many years. Russel was an extremely active member of Merritt Speedway, racing, maintaining and supporting his family team throughout the years. He first got behind the wheel at 16, and continued to race until his children were old enough to take over for him. Even though he was no longer racing, he continued to be an active member of the team up until his passing. Aside from racing, his family and grandchildren, Russel enjoyed scuba diving in Higgins Lake, the Grand Traverse Bay, and also dove the Great Lakes Shipwrecks.
