Manton - Betty Lou Dowell, of Manton and formerly of Lansing and Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at her home. She was 80.
Betty was born into a large family on July 23, 1939, in St. Louis, MI to Edmund and Helen (Daniels) Shephard. Betty was raised in Coleman, MI, and on February 19, 1960 entered into marriage with Albert Dowell in Mt. Pleasant. After earning her Bachelor's and Master's degrees, Betty, began teaching computer sciences at both Central Michigan University and Saginaw Valley for a number of years. In 2005, Betty and Al made Manton their home and they both jumped right in and became an active part of the community. They were heavily involved with the Manton Senior Center and the area craft shows to name a few. Betty had a passion for writing and had published several books in addition to being part of the Write To Publish Group in Cadillac. She will be deeply missed.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of nearly 60 years, Al Dowell of Manton; her children, Becky Lyzen of Rochester Hills, Rocky (Robin) Dowell, Jr. of Lake Isabella; Ben (Lee) Dowell of North Dakota, and Nicci (Dan) Tice of Mt. Pleasant; twelve grandchildren, Andy, Tyler, Ryan, Taylor, John, David, Niesje, Kayla, Greg, Cole, Blake, and Jordyn; eight great-grandchildren; several siblings, nieces and nephews, as well as many other loving family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lana Lynn in 1967 and her grandson, Matthew.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Hall-Holdship Funeral Home, with visitation for friends to take place one hour prior. Private interment will be at East Lawn Memory Gardens in Okemos the following day.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
