Roberta Marie Buchanan, age 91 of Lake City passed away Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the home of her son in Lake City.

Roberta was born March 8, 1924 in Ann Arbor to Arthur and Sadie (Miller) O’Neill.

Roberta first came to Lake City in 1946 to work at the Lake City Hotel as a bartender. The hotel, at that time, was owned and operated by her parents.

It was while working there that she met her future husband, Robert (Buck) Buchanan, who was a state police officer in Cadillac. They married on May 3, 1947. He preceded her in death in 1999.
They followed his job by moving to Paw Paw, Mt. Pleasant, back to Cadillac and then to East Lansing where Buck retired in 1976. After Buck’s retirement they settled back in Lake City in 1980.

Bert had many occupations throughout the years, but her favorite one was when she worked at the Missaukee Golf Course, where she was able to meet all the Lake City golfers.

Bert was a member of the Lake City American Legion Auxillary, the Elks Lodge and St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Lake City.

Roberta is survived by her son Robert Bruce (Diane) Buchanan of Lake City,
five grandchildren: Kimberly Buchanan of Long Beach, CA, Melissa (Scott) Hiller of Jackson, MI, Robert (Kelly) Buchanan of Shorewood, IL, Kelly Boyd Caudell of Farmington, AR and Kerry Boyd Cannedy of Fort Myers, FL and seven great grandchildren: Mallory, Andrew, Trent, Brody, Tade, William and Samuel.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death, as well as her son Michael and daughter Joy Lynn.

A graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Lake City Cemetery with Rev. James VonTobel officiating.

Memorial contributions may be directed to either Hospice of Michigan or Missaukee Council on Aging.
