Nelson Lee Bard

Nelson Lee Bard of Lake City, MI went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 16, 2016. Nelson passed away at home after a long battle with cancer.
Nelson was born at home on September 17, 1942 to Daniel and Lola Bell (Hinkley) Bard.
Nelson married Barbara Jean Fisher on June 21, 1962 in Los Angeles, CA. She preceded him in death in 2001.
Nelson attended school in Lake City prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps where he served from 1961 to 1965. Following his service Nelson returned to the Flint area where he worked for DuPont prior to joining the Carpenters Local 1373 Apprenticeship program in 1971. In 1976 Nelson became a Journeyman Carpenter.
During his career Nelson worked on several large projects including the Hyatt Hotel, AutoWorld, Water Street Pavilion and several buildings at the U of M -Flint Campus. Nelson also served as a Business Agent for Carpenters Local 1373 from 1985 until 1992 as well as serving as Financial Secretary and on district and regional counsels for 1373. Nelson retired from the Carpenters in 2000 and was a union member of 45 years.
He was a member of the Lake City Eagles Lodge #3884 and the American Legion Post #300 of Lake City. When Nelson wasn’t busy working on projects he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughter Ann Whitman of Cadillac, and sons Mark Bard of Alma and Dan (Dawn) Bard of Fenton, four grandchildren: Jeremy, Aubre, Devvon and Hunter and two great grandchildren: Brayden and Evelynn.
He is also survived by brothers: Don Bard of Lake City, Richard (Mary) Bard of Sears and Carl (Jeanne) Metzger Jr. of Lake City and sisters: Joan McKerchie of Lake City, Marjorie Bard of Mt. Pleasant, Wilma Sirpilla of Lake City and Ada Baughan of Lake City and several nieces and nephews.
Nelson was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Jean Haselhuhn and Karen Bard.
A special thank you to Amanda dad’s chemo nurse and to Tammy and Bonnie his home aides.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016 at Young Funeral Home in Lake City, MI with Pastor Joel Stiff officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lake City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center in Reed City.
