Johan “Jim” Wyngarden passed away unexpectedly at home in Lake City on September 9, 2014; he was 78.
Born and raised in Zeeland, he played football, basketball and baseball at Zeeland High School and attended Hope College. He married fellow Zeeland native Karen Huxtable and they raised three children.
He began his career in industrial engineering in Ludington; subsequent job changes moved the family to Ionia, Grandville and Northville. Along the way he earned his real estate license and spent several years as a residential agent in Northville, before retiring to Lake City.
Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, golf, puzzles, card games and just enjoying time with family and friends. He was a very outgoing person who could strike up a conversation with anyone. He attended the Christian Reformed Church.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Karen, sons Charles (Gayle Schaeffer) and John (Rita
Tyler), daughter Amy Barker (Brian), four grandchildren, brother-in-law Philip Johnston, sisters-in-law Joy Kraai, Joann Bisbee and 13 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Friends Ministry of Lake City or charity of choice.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, September 14, 2014 at the Lake City Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Mical Pugh officiating. A time of visitation will begin at 1:30 pm until the time of service.
