Gertrude Eva Chess, age 93 of Houghton Lake passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at her home.

She was born March 4, 1924 in Logan Township, Ogemaw County, Michigan; the daughter of John
and Eva (Miller) Meiser.

She married Josiah (Joe) Chess and he preceded her in death.

Gertrude was a long-time resident of Houghton Lake where she worked and retired from
Consumers Energy. She graduated from Flint Business College and worked for the tank plant there during World War II.

She was a founding member of the National Corvette Restorers Society. Gertrude enjoyed painting, quilting and sewing teddy bears.

Gertrude was a member of the United Methodist Church in Houghton Lake.

She is survived by her children Sandra Wendel of Roscommon, Roger (Carol) Wendel of Allouez and Wendel (Gretchen) Wendel of Grand Cayman, BWI. She is also survived by her
step children, Grace Godell of St. Ignace, Mary Jo (Chris) Leverett of Eatontown, NJ and step daughter in law Judy Chess of Culpepper, VA, brothers: Calvin Meiser of West Branch, Carl Meiser of Stafford, TX, William Meiser of West Branch and sisters: Alice Morache and Dorothy Tate both of Boise, ID. She is also survived by her numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by step son in law Raymond Godell, step son Bill Chess and broth-ers Floyd Meiser and Ronald Meiser.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 8, 2018 at the Houghton Lake United Methodist Church, 7059 W. Houghton Lake Dr., Houghton Lake, MI 48629 with Rev. George Spencer officiating.
A time of visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. until the time of services.

Burial will take place in the Lake City Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Houghton Lake United Methodist Church.
