Angela Elizabeth Margurite Cannello of Lake City, formally of Sault St. Marie, MI, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2015, at her daughter’s home. She was 88 years old.

Angela was born in Crossgar, County Down, Northern Ireland (Ulster) to Alfred and Anne (Stockman) Alexander on June 4, 1926.

During WWII, Angela and a close friend Rose, went to work in London, England, at Atheium’s in the Mall a short way from Buckingham Palace. It was there on June 4 they served dinner to General Eisenhower and several other officials before D-Day.

She went back to Maghera, Northern Ireland to visit her mother. While there, she met Frank Smith who was stationed with the 552nd Engineers. He was sent to North Africa, then Italy. Three years later they married on June 25, 1945. Her sister, Mary Alexander and Willard Littlefield stood up for them.

Angela and her daughter Sandra came to the United States in March 1947, on the ship M.S. John Ericsson. After disembarking, the ship burned in the New York Harbor. After some delays they arrived in the Sault on March 4, 1947. After 22 years Angela and Frank were divorced. In June of 1968 she married James Cannello.

Angela worked at the Soo Theater, Cowans, and was last employed at The Hub where she was a manager until the store closed in1979.
She took up golf and was the club champion and also made some hole in ones.

Just prior to her passing, she came to live with Sandra and Dean.
A special thank you to Munson Hospice, Cadillac. and also Mrs.James (Julie) Kibbe of Sault St. Marie, who went above and beyond to help care for my mother.

She is survived by her husband, James; daughter, Sandra (Dean) DuVall of Lake City; sister, Mary Murphy, Auckland, New Zealand; grandchildren, Kelly (Robin) Dormon, Mackinaw Island, MI, and Kerry (Tim) Carpenter, Adrian, MI; great grandchildren, Jeffrey (Ashley) Cunningham of St. John’s, MI; Chris (Cory) Dorman of VT, Joli (Matt) Heavin of IN and great-great grandchildren, Henry, Samantha and Clarabelle and one to be born in May 2015.

She is preceded in death was her parents, brothers; Sammy, Tommy, Alfie, Noel, Robbie and Isaiah and former husband, Frank.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Moddersville Reformed Church with Rev. Sherwin (Chic) Broersma officiating.
Memorial contributions can be directed to Moddersville Reformed Church or Munson Hospice, Cadillac.
